Alumni E-newsletter
When the new Alumni e-newsletter started in 2004 we held a contest to name it. Over 100 different name suggestions were submitted. They ranged from The Ol' Hawk Talk to Sir Willy's World. After much debate and discussion, the Communications Committee assembled a list of the top ten names. This unranked list was then put online so alumni could vote for their favourite name.
A total of 28% of the voters picked Alma Matters as their #1 choice, making it the winner of the contest. Runners up were The Laurier Link with 21% and Laurier Connection with 13% of the total votes.
Scott McKay, '95 came up with the clever name Alma Matters. He decided on this name because of his enjoyment of wordplay and always referring to Laurier as his alma mater. During his time at Laurier, Scott worked for the Cord taking pictures of the football team. His father, Ian McKay, was a professor at Laurier for over 30 years. Scott's favourite memory of Laurier is relaxing in his father's office when school became overwhelming.
Scott currently lives in the Northwest Territories with his wife, Ingrid Nielsen, '96 (a former Editor-in-Chief for the Cord) as well as Sparky and Tuco, their two dogs.
