History & Mission
The History of the Alumni Association
The Alumni Association of Wilfrid Laurier University dates back to its formation in 1920, under the name the "Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Canada". The Association was incorporated in 1963, under the name "Waterloo Lutheran University Alumni Association". Since 1973, the Association has operated as the Wilfrid Laurier University Alumni Association (WLUAA). They are a separately incorporated entity from Wilfrid Laurier University and act as the official voice to Laurier on behalf of all alumni.
The WLUAA Mission
The Association seeks to foster alumni interaction with the University and Alumni Communities; to promote active alumni participation in the affairs of the University; to maintain and promote the reputation of the University and contribute to its ongoing development.
Who and Where Our Graduates Are
What We Do
WLUAA has an elected Board of Directors comprised of volunteers from various years of graduation and faculties, and works for you on a wide range of issues. It speaks on your behalf on issues related to the university and assists the institution in achieving its academic mission.
The role of the board is to research, design and implement as well as manage programs and services to broaden the base of active and involved alumni, thus strengthening their ties to Laurier. Through these programs, the Alumni Association wants to provide additional value to your degree and education from Laurier by offering co-operative programs that provide Laurier alumni with special deals, programs and discounts not offered to the general public.
The WLU Alumni Association subsidizes and presents events in your local area so that you can connect with local Laurier alumni. It also lends financial support to on-campus and external groups to assist current students and community programs within Kitchener/Waterloo while also playing a pivotal role in Homecoming. As one of the main events of the year, Homecoming is especially important to the Alumni Association because it provides the opportunity for all alumni to come back to their alma mater and enjoy the company of good friends and maintain their strong affinity to Laurier.
The Alumni Board is elected annually and the slate is presented during the Annual General Meeting. Laurier's alumni are also represented on various boards and committees at the university. They coordinate these postings, as required by the Act of the Legislature that allows Laurier to exist.
Alumni sit on the university's Senate and the Board of Governors. Alumni give their valuable time and expertise back to Laurier unselfishly, which helps to give perspective and history to an ever-changing institution.
