7pm – Aesthetics Of The Small: A Conversation With 2020 Scotiabank Giller Prize Winner Souvankham Thammavongsa

While teaching creative writing at Laurier’s Brantford campus, author Souvankham Thammavongsa won the 2020 Scotiabank Giller Prize and 2021 Trillium Book Award for her short story collection, How to Pronounce Knife. Join Souvankham and Eleanor Ty, Professor of English, for a discussion exploring Souvankham's work, including the ways the author takes insignificant and seemingly small events and elevates them into great literature.

"How to Pronounce Knife is a stunning collection of stories that portray the immigrant experience in achingly beautiful prose. The emotional expanse chronicled in this collection is truly remarkable. These stories are vessels of hope, of hurt, of rejection, of loss and of finding one's footing in a new and strange land. Thammavongsa's fiction cuts to the core of the immigrant reality like a knife – however you pronounce it." - Scotiabank Giller Prize jury citation

Stay Golden by Staying Safe and Respecting Our Communities

Staying Golden means being safe and respectful. We are still in the midst of a global health crisis.

Anyone participating in unsanctioned street parties could face suspension and/or expulsion from the university, fines for violating the Reopening Ontario Act and possibly criminal charges.

Stay Golden this Homecoming.

Vaccinations will Bring Us Back Together, Faster

Everyone can do their part to prevent the spread of COVID-19 by avoiding gatherings, staying physically distant, and wearing a mask when required. Members of the university community are also strongly encouraged to receive both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine to help reduce the spread of the virus and its variants. Vaccination will be a requirement for Laurier students, faculty and staff before coming to campus in September. For more information on Laurier’s COVID-19 response and for information about how you can do your part to prevent the spread of COVID-19, visit wlu.ca/recovery.
